Why your Spotify playlists might be the reason you’re single

With Spotify’s 2024 Wrapped being, well, unwrapped, and with Bumble’s latest Global dating trends citing sharing playlists amongst the ‘micro-mance’ smaller gestures that singles agree shows how we express love and interest now, SALT decided to face the music and delve into its plethora of dating insights – and into the playlists of its users. We set out to find out which music genre attracted the most likes and matches. Do music and attraction have any correlation?

The Results

The data from 109,000 SALT users was crunched, and there was a clear winner, with Indie music fans coming out as the dominant favourites at the top of the most popular singles list, with a higher ratio of likes to swipes than Christian singles who like other genres, closely followed by K-Pop, Pop, Latin and Folk music lovers.  At the bottom of the scale, by contrast, singles who like Big Room, Drill and Dubstep are significantly less popular.

In terms of individual artists, users who like Upperroom, Lauren Daigle, NEEDTOBREATHE reigned supreme with the highest proportion of likes, with fans of Andy Mineo and Skillet at the bottom of the list. But is it really our music choices that deter rather than attract? Or do our playlist preferences say more about us than we think? Indie and Upperroom fans are the most attractive, yes, but what are they like, what do they value, and what do they have in common

Music and Values

SALT dug a bit deeper and looked at the underlying values, the characteristics that resonate and rank most highly with the most popular profiles. Sense of Humour and Emotional Maturity top the list of traits that Indie fans value, either in themselves or in a partner, closely followed by Honesty, Empathy, Compassion and Faithfulness. Lauren Daigle and Upperroom fans also ranked these highly.

Unsurprisingly, the most popular character traits overall, across all music fans, were Commitment, Faithfulness and Compassion.

With so much in the news to dishearten and discourage, and uncertainty about the future impacting who we are and how we date, it’s really not hard to see how these characteristics are sought after and are attractive in a potential partner. Music, too, has the power to stir emotions and to bring people together, undoubtedly. But how aligned should our music tastes be? We know that compromise is required in all long-term relationships – and this most definitely extends to the playlists we choose! In it for the long journey (or just going on one) though, it helps to be on the same track.

And the overall takeaway perhaps? If you’re single and want a date, listen to more Indie and K-Pop. Stop listening to Dubstep and Drill if you want to optimise your chances of finding love? Or, to coin Shakespeare’s famous quote from Twelfth Night, “If music be the food of love, play on” – but just think twice about what you’re sharing.

Each list also reveals the top 5 most important character traits for fans of those genres / artists, in frequency order from 1st to 5th position, with no. 1 being the most-commonly selected trait by fans of that particular music genre/artist.
