That&#8217;s how God designed it. But knowing <em>why<\/em> you believe that matters far more than just knowing that you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;ve flirted with the idea of learning another language for most of my adult life. I did well at German at school. I loved German films too. But the moment exams passed, the vocab left my brain with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Years later I became no stranger to Duolingo (other apps are available). That poor owl saw the rise and fall of my commitment a few too many times. My willpower was often strong. I once managed a 50-day streak. But whenever life got busy, my progress slipped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My most successful attempt came when I moved to France for work. Suddenly I had a real reason to learn. It would make my work better. It would help me connect with people. It would cut down on the miscommunication I kept running into. I realised something in my earlier attempts. Even when my willpower held, my <em>why<\/em> often wasn&#8217;t strong enough to carry me through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-tl-dr\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">TL;DR<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Bible doesn&#8217;t contain an explicit &#8220;no sex before marriage&#8221; rule. But it consistently assumes sex belongs within marriage (Deuteronomy 22).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Genesis describes sex as making two people &#8220;one flesh.&#8221; The Hebrew word is echad. It means fused at the deepest level, body and spirit together.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>1 Corinthians 6:9\u201320 sets out what sex <em>isn&#8217;t<\/em> for: self-gratification, manipulation, being bought, casual or extramarital use.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you&#8217;ve crossed this line already, or had it crossed for you, grace and support are available. This isn&#8217;t about shame.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Saving sex for marriage is &#8220;for&#8221; something: trust, the other person, and the long haul of a whole married life.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knowing <em>why<\/em> you&#8217;re waiting matters. Chances are, eventually your willpower will fail you. As Proverbs puts it: &#8220;Enthusiasm without knowledge is no good; haste makes mistakes&#8221; (Proverbs 19:2, NLT). CofE minister and writer Ian Paul (Psephizo) puts it this way. The closest thing to a prohibition is Deuteronomy 22:28. If a man has sex with an unmarried or unbetrothed woman, they must marry. Alongside other texts, this assumes a context. Sex belongs in marriage. Unmarried people abstain. Even betrothed couples wait until after the wedding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s a tricky place to start on its own. But there&#8217;s a purpose in that lack of a blunt &#8220;don&#8217;t.&#8221; Children (and adults) often hear &#8220;don&#8217;t do that&#8221; as &#8220;that thing is bad.&#8221; Some Christians only ever hear &#8220;don&#8217;t have sex before marriage.&#8221; It&#8217;s easy to walk away from that thinking sex itself is wrong or shameful. That&#8217;s a damaging idea. It can harm someone&#8217;s whole relationship with sex later on. God&#8217;s approach instead makes something more important clear. Sex is good. And it&#8217;s designed for marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-sex-as-one-flesh-what-it-means-to-be-united\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sex as &#8220;one flesh&#8221;: what it means to be united<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sex began in Eden, inside God&#8217;s perfect creation, designed with real purpose:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Then the Lord God made the rib he had taken from the man into a woman and brought her to the man. And the man said: &#8216;This one, at last, is bone of my bone and flesh of my flesh; this one will be called &#8220;woman,&#8221; for she was taken from man.&#8217; This is why a man leaves his father and mother and bonds with his wife, and they become one flesh. Both the man and his wife were naked, yet felt no shame.&#8221; (Genesis 2:22\u201325, CSB)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In his book <em>Loveology<\/em> \u2014 still one of the best Christian relationship books on this topic \u2014 John Mark Comer digs into the original Hebrew here. The word used for what happens between a man and his wife is <em>echad<\/em>: not just &#8220;one,&#8221; but fused together at the deepest level. Sex isn&#8217;t only physical union; it&#8217;s the union of body and spirit. Separating the two sells sex short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Sex: why it\u2019s for marriage\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RIVz4zD5EH4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-a-higher-call-free-total-faithful-fruitful\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">A higher call: free, total, faithful, fruitful<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pope Paul VI&#8217;s <em>Humanae Vitae<\/em> describes Christian marriage \u2014 and by extension, sex within it \u2014 as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Free<\/strong> \u2014 a husband and wife choose each other and choose to give themselves to one another.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Total<\/strong> \u2014 they give themselves fully: mind, spirit and body. This is the <em>echad<\/em> in practice.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Faithful<\/strong> \u2014 a fully committed, lifelong sexual fidelity to one another.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fruitful<\/strong> \u2014 the openness to new life that comes with sex, reflecting the call in Eden to &#8220;be fruitful and multiply.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are worth holding onto if you&#8217;re a Christian dating with marriage in mind \u2014 they&#8217;re a good measure of what sex in marriage is meant to reflect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-what-is-sex-not-for-according-to-the-bible\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nrb.ttm.mybluehost.me\/sex\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2867\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">What is sex not for<\/a>, according to the Bible?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1 Corinthians 6:9\u201320 sets out some clear boundaries. In summary, sex isn&#8217;t for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Self-gratification<\/strong> \u2014 including lust, masturbation, and pornography<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Manipulating others<\/strong> \u2014 including sexual exploitation, abuse and rape<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Being bought<\/strong> \u2014 the Bible speaks against prostitution<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The unmarried<\/strong> \u2014 including casual sex and adultery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Same-sex pairings<\/strong> \u2014 the Bible describes sex as designed for a man and a woman<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marriage doesn&#8217;t automatically make every sexual encounter &#8220;God-honouring&#8221; either. If selfishness, abuse or lust are present within marital sex, that&#8217;s not the sex God intended \u2014 married or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-if-you-ve-made-choices-you-regret\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">If you&#8217;ve made choices you regret<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like my repeated attempts at learning French, sometimes the &#8220;why&#8221; falters and the will gives way. Temptation is a real, ongoing thing, and it doesn&#8217;t always end with the outcome you hoped for. If this applies to you \u2014 hold onto grace. There&#8217;s always time to make a new choice and keep pursuing what God has for your life, because He wants the best for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-if-it-happened-outside-your-control\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">If it happened outside your control<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For some, sex before marriage happened without their choice. As Leela Zander writes in &#8220;How to enjoy sex the way God designed&#8221;: if you&#8217;ve been sexually abused, it&#8217;s vital to know that God is not displeased with you. What happened wasn&#8217;t your choice \u2014 the fault lies with the person who abused you, and they are accountable to God for that. You have not dishonoured Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sexual sin \u2014 including acts committed against us \u2014 grieves God deeply. If this is your experience, talk to a trusted friend, mentor or church leader, and seek professional support if you need it. <em>(A brief flag for the team: this is a sensitive topic \u2014 worth a final read-through before publishing to make sure the tone and any support signposting feel right.)<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-is-sex-outside-marriage-ever-really-good\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is sex outside marriage ever &#8220;really good&#8221;?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It would be dishonest to claim all consensual sex outside marriage leads to total ruin. Sex is good. People will experience real pleasure, bonding and connection either way, whether or not it happens within the boundary God designed. That&#8217;s simply true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Genesis 2:24 is the anchor here. Jesus himself repeated it (Matthew 19:4\u20135): &#8220;a man leaves his father and mother and bonds with his wife, and they become one flesh.&#8221; That&#8217;s what&#8217;s designed to be <em>fully<\/em> good. The exclusivity here is one man, one woman, within marriage. It&#8217;s as culturally difficult today as it was in Jesus&#8217; time. It&#8217;s fair to feel the weight of that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To God, all sex outside marriage falls outside His design. As Christians, there&#8217;s no hierarchy of &#8220;worse&#8221; or &#8220;better&#8221; sins here. If you love Jesus and want to follow Him fully, this call is for every stage: dating, singleness, or engagement. Honouring it is how sex is experienced the way it was intended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-why-save-sex-for-marriage-what-it-s-for\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why save sex for marriage? What it&#8217;s &#8220;for&#8221;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For Christians who choose to wait, sex serves the marriage because it&#8217;s genuinely <em>for<\/em> the marriage:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>It&#8217;s for trust<\/strong> \u2014 saying yes to a lifetime of sex with one person is one of the clearest expressions of trust there is, through the good times and the hard ones.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>It&#8217;s for the other person<\/strong> \u2014 marriage isn&#8217;t about self, it&#8217;s about self-giving. Choosing only your spouse says: I want you, not just the physical, but the <em>echad<\/em> \u2014 the fuller union.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>It&#8217;s for the future<\/strong> \u2014 saving sex for marriage means building a sex life for the long haul, not just the &#8220;young and fun&#8221; years. It&#8217;s a bond meant to deepen until death do you part.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-frequently-asked-questions\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Frequently asked questions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Does the Bible explicitly say sex is only for marriage?<\/strong> Not in a single direct commandment, but the Bible consistently assumes sex belongs within marriage \u2014 most clearly in passages like Deuteronomy 22 and Genesis 2, which describe marriage as the context for becoming &#8220;one flesh.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What does 1 Corinthians 6 say about sex outside marriage?<\/strong> 1 Corinthians 6:9\u201320 warns against sex used for self-gratification, manipulation, exploitation, or outside marriage altogether, framing sex instead as something designed for the committed union of marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What if I&#8217;ve already had sex before marriage as a Christian?<\/strong> Grace is available.
