Definitely worth it. Nothing to lose and so much to potentially gain<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-Luke.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jackie sat just outside the coffee shop window.&nbsp; <em>Those rafters are a pretty cool color,<\/em> she thought, <em>but I\u2019m sure he\u2019d still be able to see me if I walked closer<\/em>.&nbsp; She waited just a couple more seconds with her hands in her navy-blue romper pockets, then lurched forward toward the door.&nbsp; <em>No going back now<\/em>, she thought, her feet outpacing her brain and into the shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Breathing in the overwhelming aroma of espresso, she looked around for Aiden.&nbsp; He wasn\u2019t in the corner, or by the window, or upstairs in the mezzanine.&nbsp; <em>I\u2019m here first,<\/em> she thought, exhaling all her nervous energy in one breath.&nbsp; <em>Should I order, or just wait\u2026I think I\u2019ll just hang out on my phone<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She sat on the stool by the wall in front of a water cooler.&nbsp; There were rainbow waves on the walls behind her, and behind the recycle bin was a print-off of Oscar the Grouch reaching over the bin and saying \u201cDon\u2019t be trashy! Recycle your cup!\u201d&nbsp; Jackie chuckled.&nbsp; Dumb, but charming nonetheless.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jackie leaned over and opened up SALT SOCIAL.&nbsp; She\u2019d been following a thread about whether coffee dates count as a real date.&nbsp; One of the comments said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I think so, it&#8217;s a date. I don&#8217;t know if it&#8217;s necessary to clarify, because after all if you accept that coffee, it&#8217;s because you took your time to get to know that person at least a little, right?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-Johnny<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Glad she didn\u2019t have to worry about that.&nbsp; They\u2019d decided to meet in a coffee shop after church. It wasn\u2019t a Starbucks or a Cafe Nero, but a quirky independent little place, and one that he\u2019d recommended.&nbsp; Also the way he B-lined through the aisles of chairs to where she was standing at the front of the church to ask her out was a pretty dead-on giveaway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"653\" src=\"https:\/\/nrb.ttm.mybluehost.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/cool-cafe-dates-1024x653.jpg\" alt=\"cafe\" class=\"wp-image-54\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nrb.ttm.mybluehost.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/cool-cafe-dates-1024x653.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nrb.ttm.mybluehost.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/cool-cafe-dates-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nrb.ttm.mybluehost.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/cool-cafe-dates-768x490.jpg 768w, https:\/\/nrb.ttm.mybluehost.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/cool-cafe-dates-1536x979.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/nrb.ttm.mybluehost.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/cool-cafe-dates-2048x1306.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/nrb.ttm.mybluehost.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/cool-cafe-dates-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Right at that moment, Jackie looked up and saw Aiden just outside the door.&nbsp; He seemed to be talking to someone out of sight, and then he leaned forward and she could see someone\u2019s hand on his back &#8211; a hug.&nbsp; A full-frontal hug.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jackie got up to see who it was, but they were gone before she could get an idea.&nbsp; Aiden was smiling when he came in, though, and immediately pointed at Jackie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHey you!\u201d he said, bounding up to her the same way he did when he saw her through the aisles at church.&nbsp; His mop-head style haircut and sharp-angled face looking down at her sparked an electric wave through her whole being.&nbsp; For a split-second, she imagined what he\u2019d look like in a tux with a boutonni\u00e8re.&nbsp; Aiden came up and gave her a big bear hug, way more than he gave to the mystery person at the door.&nbsp; <em>I was reading into it<\/em>, she thought, <em>must have just been his friend<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWeird seeing you here,\u201d he mused, smirking.&nbsp; \u201cBeen here long?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJust a few minutes,\u201d Jackie said, her cheeks turning a spotty coral under her curly bobbed locks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aiden looked at the counter and back at her, pointing at the coffee machines.&nbsp; \u201cOh &#8211; did you not want any coffee?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJust waiting for you!\u201d she said, the eagerness in her voice getting a confused-looking response.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They came over to the counter and she waited in line behind him, expecting him to turn around and ask what she wanted.&nbsp; To her bewilderment, she only saw the back of his printed tee until after she\u2019d heard the beep of his card being scanned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Maybe he\u2019s just not a traditional guy.&nbsp; That\u2019s okay, kind of rude but I\u2019m sure we can work it out still.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He turned around finally.&nbsp; \u201cI love the espresso here &#8211; their mochas and stuff aren\u2019t as good, but their espresso is top-notch.&nbsp; I\u2019ll meet you over at the table.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOkay.\u201d Jackie looked despondently at the person behind the counter, who gave her a knowing look.&nbsp; Despite Aiden\u2019s recommendation, she ordered a mocha anyway, and pulled out her phone to pay, forgetting SOCIAL was still open.&nbsp; She read a couple of comments while the barista was typing her order in:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I think making sure that both parties define the \u2018coffee date\u2019 the same is important. Some may misunderstand.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-Alisha<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>I will always ask, is this a date? Why make things so complicated \ud83d\ude05?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">-Lydia<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jackie sat down with her cream-laden coffee in hand.&nbsp; \u201cSorry, I didn\u2019t take your recommendation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aiden laughed.&nbsp; \u201cBooo!\u201d he said, pulling out his phone and scrolling through.&nbsp; Jackie just stared at him and hesitated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo is this a date?\u201d the words came out of her like a freezing gust of wind threatening to make her coffee cold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aiden brushed his hair back and gave her a shocked look.&nbsp; \u201cWhoah really?&nbsp; Oh crap\u2026\u201d&nbsp; He put his phone down.&nbsp; \u201cI mean, you seem cool and all but I wasn\u2019t like\u2026I guess it could be\u2026\u201d He furrowed his eyebrows and looked at Jackie, who shook her head in seeming disbelief.&nbsp; \u201cI guess I could have been more clear, sorry about that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It took everything Jackie had to not stand up right there\u2026throw the hot mocha in his face\u2026 but she realized it wasn\u2019t all his fault in the end.&nbsp; \u201cIt\u2019s okay,\u201d she lied, \u201cI wasn\u2019t thinking it was, just checking.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo worries, sorry I just didn\u2019t..yeah.&nbsp; Let\u2019s move on.&nbsp; Cheers!\u201d he held his tiny shot of espresso up and clanked her large porcelain glass, which she barely reciprocated.&nbsp; A little bit of her mocha\u2019s cream topping fell on the table, narrowly missing her open phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She was glad she read those comments.&nbsp; Maybe they can be just friends after all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>There is no hard and fast rule.&nbsp; It can depend on the philosophy\/upbringing of both individuals involved.
