Financial Giving might be a topic that’s missed as you think about compatibility with a partner and ways to build a God-centered relationship<\/a>. But money causes a lot of arguments! These questions will help you as you discern marriage together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Talking about finances can feel like a bit of a romance killer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

No wonder many couples don\u2019t talk about their giving practices before marriage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether that\u2019s supporting charities or tithing – our giving shouldn\u2019t go when we say, \u2018I do\u2019. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

To help you get on the same page, in this post we\u2019ll go through 5 questions to ask about giving before marriage. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Marriage and money<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Have you noticed how money is mentioned in traditional marriage vows? \u201cFor richer, for poorer […] to love and to cherish, till death us do part.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    In marriage two people commit to life with each other, no matter the circumstances. They are saying, \u201call I am is yours, including my money.\u201d\u00a0 This self-giving reflects God\u2019s love, freely given to each of us.\u00a0Here’s some amazing Bible study topics for couples<\/a> that illustrate this unity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Good marriage preparation includes discussing your finances. You might do this on a course, with your minister\/ priest or a trusted mentor couple. As you make a budget plan, don\u2019t forget to bring up giving too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    When we give; as single people, dating, engaged or married – we get to partner with God! We acknowledge all that we have is a gift from Him. Our giving shows an \u201call I have is yours\u201d attitude, back to God. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A couple I know continued to give even when they suffered through debt, job loss and raising a young family. Hearing this decision, I thought they were incredibly brave. Even better, God provided! It was inspiring to hear how they repaid their debt without ever having to reduce their tithing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Giving is an incredibly powerful testimony of faith. It shows our family and friends what a life trusting God looks like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Financial Giving Question #1: What is our motivation for giving?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    So where do you start? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The best place, like most things, is to look inward. What motivates our decision to give, at any point in life, matters to God. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It\u2019s best to ensure you\u2019re singing from the same hymn sheet as a couple. This starts with our hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A call to joyful generosity<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    If tithing comes from a place of guilt, grudge or grandiose – it\u2019s not what God wants. He\u2019s after our generous and joyful offerings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    2 Corinthians tell us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u2018Give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver\u2019 (2 Corinthians 9:7)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Giving at its core, is worship to God. Don\u2019t miss out on the freedom and joy to be found in generous giving. In giving we are extending our praise to God. No matter our bank balance, giving worships God for His provision and how trustworthy He is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Focusing on God\u2019s generous love is a solid foundation for all your decisions in marriage. Especially those around money. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This isn\u2019t everyone\u2019s default setting. Spend time praying through your feelings around tithing. Sometimes choosing obedience before gladness is the right first step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A call to follow God\u2019s Word<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    According to Stewardship\u2019s recent survey<\/a>, 56% of young Christians said that \u2018following biblical guidelines of giving\u2019 was their biggest motivation to give. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It\u2019s Biblically clear that God asks us to give. It\u2019ll help to read through the scriptures on this topic. This blog by Tithe.ly<\/a> might clarify tithing in the Bible for you too.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I often go back to the story of Hannah. In 1 Samuel, Hannah is deeply anguished and begs God to help her have a son. In her pleading she vows, \u201cI will give him to the Lord all the days of his life\u201d (1 Samuel 1:11). God, remembering Hannah, grants her a son. She keeps her word, giving back to God what she promised. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I prayed for this boy, and since the Lord gave me what I asked him for, <\/strong>I now give the boy to the Lord. For as long as he lives, he is given to the Lord.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I\u2019m sure I\u2019m not the only one who can relate to Hannah\u2019s story here. Desperately pleading for God to provide (a job, healing, a partner) can feel unending. But we can take inspiration from Hannah\u2019s faithfulness too. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Giving back to God what was His in the first place (our money) is what Biblical tithing really means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A call to Kingdom work<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

    In the same survey,<\/a> Stewardship found that \u2018wanting to steward money well\u2019 (54%) and \u2018wanting to further the work of the Church\u2019 (46%) <\/em>were key motivations for giving. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    When we give our money it\u2019s towards a purpose. Mainly tithing is for work of the local church and its employees. Giving to charity focuses on the mission field, however close or far away from home that is. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

    I love taking some time in worship at church to think about what my giving is going toward. This is the great privilege of giving, knowing our money is enabling God\u2019s work. As you pray about giving as a couple, reflect on how God is using you to transform lives and build His Kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
