Some of us live by them. Plan your wedding before your first date. Propose on your third date. Get married 6 months later. A year later your beautiful baby is born. Here&#8217;s to having a bit of fun observing Christian dating culture at its most extreme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-cliches\"><strong>Cliches<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a wonderful young girl with her mum sitting in the seats in front of me on this train.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\u2019s 4, I know because she\u2019s declared it about twenty times. Very loudly!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She\u2019s bouncing around in her chair constantly, pulling herself up to see out the window, counting the stations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though the exact phrase hasn\u2019t quite come out of her mouth so far, she\u2019s essentially saying \u201cARE WE THERE YET?\u201d on repeat to her poor mum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other exclamations also include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201dOur train is so SLOW!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI just cough sneezed\u201d (this doesn&#8217;t add to my point, she\u2019s just too cute)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis station and then our station mum? NO? WHY NOT?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Needless to say, she is bored out of her mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She is the epitome of a child on a long journey and she is fulfilling all the cliches. Textbook!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tl-dr-the-summary\"><strong>TL; DR: The Summary<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A cliche is a cliche for a reason, right?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So if this little girl sees no problem in leaning into hers, then there\u2019s no harm in other cliches too like\u2026 in Chrisitan dating?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Christian dating has MANY cliches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What the little girl doesn\u2019t notice is how her cliche behaviour is making her journey a bit miserable, tedious, frustrating even. Not to mention the testing of her mother\u2019s saintly patience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Could this be a warning for living out the cliches of Christian dating too?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might think of Christian dating and you\u2019re hit with a wave of cringe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or maybe there\u2019s dating behaviour that you\u2019re unaware of partaking in.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s look at every Christian dating cliche (or at least the big hits) and what they might warn us of.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The pursuit.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Future-casting.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Guarding your heart.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Let go and let God.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Wedding day ready.<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The perfect profile.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Every Christian dating cliche...\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/keFgwod9jY4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Watch this for some laughs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-christian-dating-cliche-1-the-pursuit\"><strong>Christian Dating Cliche #1: The pursuit<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not sure when dating started to sound like a David Attenborough documentary of a predator stalking its prey\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some cliche phrases to watch out for:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I\u2019m pursuing someone right now.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I\u2019m looking for a guy\/girl who will pursue me.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>God, show me who I should pursue.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The premise of pursuing someone may sound wholesome on first encounter. We might perceive this in dating to meaning that person or you are being:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Intentional&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Exclusive \/ monogamous&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Led by God<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But when you think about it more, it&#8217;s just\u2026 a bit\u2026 weird.&nbsp;\u2018The pursuit\u2019 in Christian dating often in reality suggests that one person (person A let\u2019s say) is pursuing and the other (that\u2019s person B) is okay with being pursued (by person A) or they <strong>expect <\/strong>it, otherwise they deem that other person not good enough to date them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m not saying that person A is always a man and person B is always a woman, though in general terms I\u2019d say this feels more common.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This premise sits uncomfortably for me &#8211; that the pursuit is one) an okay way to go about dating someone and two) a good way to judge if you <em>should <\/em>date someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-does-pursue-mean\"><strong>What does &#8216;pursue&#8217; mean?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s not forget that \u2018to pursue\u2019 from a definition point of view points us to (thanks<a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.cambridge.org\/dictionary\/english\/pursue#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"> Cambridge Dictionary<\/a>):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Chasing or following in order to catch something or someone.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trying very hard, often to gain a result.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To aim for something having regard for little else.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>How romantic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pursuing someone doesn&#8217;t have to be a mission focus! Sure we want our potential partner to make an effort. But it has to go both ways.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For sure we should pursue our goals in work and growing skills etc. But in dating?! Maybe we should just aim to give our best to the person we\u2019re interested in.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re in a \u2018pursuit\u2019 headspace, in the role of person A or B, be mindful of how this might be turning your desire to date into a game or unhealthy goal.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, try and rephrase your thinking to being open to someone who you could date.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Less chase, more making space!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-christian-dating-cliche-2-future-casting\"><strong>Christian Dating Cliche #2: Future-casting<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You know how weather forecasting sounds good, promising, even helpful. Then the weather never turns out the way the forecast said it would. \u2018Future-casting\u2019 plays a similar game.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Future-casting cliches may include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We might get on now, but what about when\u2026&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I think they\u2019re funny but the qualities I\u2019m looking for in a wife are\u2026&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When can they meet my parents?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Over-thinkers, this one is mostly for you. Christian singles often struggle to live in the moment and catch their thoughts wandering off to the future.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many even write off a whole first date all together because they\u2019ve already thought through all the reasons why the future definitely won\u2019t work out for them, as if they know how the story ends! Take <a href=\"https:\/\/www.heartofdating.com\/podcast\/028-awkwardness-cliches-christianese-things-bianca-olthoff\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Bianca Olthoff<\/a> for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Bianca decided to write [date] a LONG email telling him all the things she was looking for in a husband, and how she thought it probably wasn\u2019t a good idea for him to go out with<\/em> <em>her anyway\u2026. and he ended up responding saying \u201c No problem, it\u2019s JUST coffee.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They did get married after all, but that\u2019s besides my point here.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh single Christian women and men of the world, why are we like this? It\u2019s a painful cliche to live within too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-ultimate-goal-in-dating\"><strong>The ultimate goal in dating<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I get it, marriage is many people\u2019s ultimate goal in dating. Yet through this, Christians who are single and looking to date&nbsp; seem to over analyse every aspect of what is often a harmless first date.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a little unreasonable to scrutinise a potential person before a date has been mentioned to figure out if a future with them will work out. For those who don\u2019t know this cliche often sounds like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We\u2019re getting on well, but I\u2019m guarding my heart.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Oh no I\u2019m not dating right now, I\u2019m guarding my heart.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Be careful, remember to guard your heart!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Disclaimer before you all shout at me. Boundaries are important, please remember that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But! Let\u2019s look at this (badly quoted) Scripture verse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On first glance, I can see how people get here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>Above all else, guard your heart,<\/em> <em>for everything you do flows from it.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Granted the \u2018above all else\u2019 does a good job at getting the alarm bells ringing. But what about reading the verse in a fuller context?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>My son, pay attention to what I say;<\/em> <em>turn your ear to my words.<\/em> <em>Do not let them out of your sight,<\/em> <em>keep them within your heart;<\/em> <em>for they are life to those who find them<\/em> <em>and health to one\u2019s whole body.<\/em> <em>Above all else, guard your heart,<\/em> <em>for everything you do flows from it.<\/em> <em>Keep your mouth free of perversity;<\/em> <em>keep corrupt talk far from your lips.<\/em> <em>Let your eyes look straight ahead;<\/em> <em>fix your gaze directly before you.<\/em> <em>Give careful thought to the paths for your feet<\/em> <em>and be steadfast in all your ways.<\/em> <em>Do not turn to the right or the left;<\/em> <em>keep your foot from evil.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Proverbs 4: 20-27<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>These are wise instructions, not for our love lives, but for our whole lives. It\u2019s spiritual direction, wisdom to apply in following God and living life that is holy and pleasing to Him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discipledojo.org\/blog\/guard-your-heart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Discipledojo<\/a> in their blog says &#8211;\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u2026\u2018guarding one\u2019s heart\u2019 isn\u2019t about dating\u2026it\u2019s about holiness.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that\u2019s because our heart isn\u2019t just about the emotional centre of ourselves. In Biblical (Hebrew) context, our heart is the centre of our whole selves. Let&#8217;s be observant and learn from our mistakes. We must guard our hearts because what\u2019s within it impacts our actions toward God and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-we-ve-turned-it-into\"><strong>What we&#8217;ve turned it into<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>But guarding our hearts in dating is seen often as an excuse to cover up fear, insecurity and prevent vulnerability in relationships.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can become a protective excuse for the single Christian. However, rejection, false starts, mistakes even, are a part of life &#8211; dating included. You might not need to kiss a few frogs, but you do have to put yourself out there in the first place. Dating will always include risk, and yes that risk may include your heart too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your tendency to \u2018guard your heart\u2019 was more a question of capacity or if you\u2019re in the right headspace to date then read our blog <strong>\u2018<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/nrb.ttm.mybluehost.me\/ready-to-date\/\">Ready to Date: 5 Signs That Show You\u2019re Relationship-Ready<\/a><strong>\u2019<\/strong> &#8211; it might have some wisdom for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-christian-dating-cliche-4-let-go-and-let-god\"><strong>Christian Dating Cliche #4: Let go and let God<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I can see this phrase on weird tea-towels and macrame wall hangings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLet go, and let God\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Can we just be super clear, in case it already wasn\u2019t, that this phrase is not a verse from the Bible\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how has it become so ingrained in Christian discourse, and turned into a dating cliche?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I\u2019m not sure what to do about (person), I\u2019m just letting go and letting God.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>I\u2019ve been single for long enough now it\u2019s time to let go and let God.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Don\u2019t worry about it, just let go and let God!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Bad decisions\/advice all round.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Christian dating we see this played out as passivity when it comes to dating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It\u2019ll come to you.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tell yourself it doesn&#8217;t matter.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@jordanittel\/video\/7051292379411729710\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">It\u2019ll happen when you least expect it\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Letting go and letting God\u2019 is a Christian single whose heart isn\u2019t really in the dating realm. In fact they might misunderstand <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boundless.org\/faith\/5-christian-cliches-that-need-to-die\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">what following God and trusting Him really looks like\u2026<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>The Christian life is gruelling. When Paul reflects on it, he doesn\u2019t think of sunsets and naps but soldiers and athletes and farmers (2 Tim. 2:3\u20136). He thinks of running tracks and boxing rings (1 Cor. 9:24\u201327)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>To anyone who would really like to be dating or in a relationship with a godly man or woman please don\u2019t let go and let God. Find a way to make it happen. Not desperately. But be active and be willing to give it a go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A good friend I know pushed themselves by going on five dates with five dates, they&#8217;re now engaged to date number 3. Just saying\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-christian-dating-cliche-5-wedding-day-ready\"><strong>Christian Dating Cliche #5: Wedding day ready<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At last, a classic!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one of the most common cliches &#8211; that every Christian is ready to march down the aisle:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All single Christian women have the dress and venue on hand, all they need is the man.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Christian men are desperate to get married (\u2018cos sex).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make dating short and wedding planning fast. That&#8217;s on the heart of every single Christian.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This just isn\u2019t true.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For me, aiming to keep dating shorter (in secular terms) wasn\u2019t about a desperation to be a bride, or even the obvious contributing factor of no sex before marriage. I wanted a love, a relationship, with passion. If you want to marry them when you\u2019re dating and engaged, why would you slow down starting your life together? Where\u2019s the passion?!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course for those choosing chastity and not living together before marriage, there\u2019s more factors that contribute to this \u2018haste\u2019 in a logistical sense than say their non-Christian friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-don-t-rush\"><strong>Don&#8217;t rush<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus there are cases of couples being a lot more impulsive than this, including non-Christians. You may know a strong couple, maybe from church, who\u2019ve got decades of marriage under their belt but only knew each other for 3 months before they were wed, and that got you thinking that getting married quick is the key to success.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But for many it\u2019s not. If you meet young you might have other priorities like finishing your degree, becoming a lawyer or doctor or travelling for a bit. Maybe you want to do a bit more of life with your partner before marriage comes into play. Just because the cliche tells you to switch up your marital status ASAP, it doesn\u2019t mean you have to nor typically want to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, our general \u2018strangers to spouses\u2019 conversion rate may be higher in the Christian community. We might be able to see God in our date, not just in their Bible study commitment and twenty prayer alarms. Perhaps we\u2019ll see God in them through the normal moments too. In fact it\u2019s often the everyday, normal moments that God\u2019s \u2018extraordinary\u2019 comes through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I love the many healing stories of Jesus in the Gospels. How He was on route elsewhere or in the middle of something (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke%2018%3A35-43&amp;version=ESV\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Luke 18:35-43<\/a>) and then someone reached out to Him and He did what only He could do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe we should apply parts of this to dating, knowing that being a bit \u2018normal\u2019 will allow the space for faith moments to occur rather than forcing them to happen or rejecting someone who doesn\u2019t present themself as a perfect Christian on their profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-let-s-conclude\"><strong>Let&#8217;s Conclude<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Well there\u2019s a whole lot of awkwardness we explored there, from the Christains who find their dates like a tiger stalking a gazelle, to the laid back people who\u2019re letting go more than Elsa.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In essence these cliches are harmless. But like the little girl on the train, perhaps leaning into them provides us with more problems than positivity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So use your wisdom, try not to plan your whole life with the person you\u2019ve just met and maybe save the wedding scrap book for the third date at least\u2026 lest you fall victim to another Christian dating cliche.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Want dating without the cringe?
